Skate Shoe Round-Up: Nike SB

Nike started producing its own line of skate shoes in 1997, but it was not considered as a core skateboarding brand among the skateboarding community, so it didn’t get the necessary support. Therefore, in 2002, Nike introduced its SB brand, also known as Nike Skateboarding,

The first model to be released was the Nike SB Dunk Low. It featured padded tongues and collars, as well as “Zoom Air” insoles. In comparison to Nike’s previous attempts of skate shoes, this model was more similar to other skate shoes on the market.

Nike SB Became Popular

In 2004, Paul Rodriguez became a figurehead of Nike SB and, at the same time, the brand also recruited Lewis Marnell as the sole Australian team rider. In March 2004, the Nike Dunk SB collection has been released and it aimed towards skateboarders in California. In comparison to the previous SB Dunk range, this new line was specifically designed for skateboarding. This collection contains shoes with increased padding, enhanced material quality, triple stitching, and Zoom Air insoles.

The Nike SB Paul Rodriguez Zoom Air Low has been released in 2005. Also, that year, Lance Mountain, one of Nike SB’s spokespersons, decided to release a version of the Nike Blazer basketball shoe from the early 1970s. This new model was named Nike Blazer SB and it was designed with several new features, including the padded collar and Zoom Air insoles. Lance Mountain joined Nike SB in 2007 after he previously rode for Adidas.

In February 2013, Nike SB released a preview of Brian Anderson’s first signature shoe model, named Nike SB Project BA. According to the Sneaker Report website, this new model shoe was characterized as “upper appears to be a two-piece construction with ample perforations for breathability”.

Nike Dunk Low Pro SB

The Nike Dunk has been released in 1985 and it was originally designed as a basketball shoe. As it offered versatility and movement during skating, it was picked up by skaters. Therefore, in 2002, Nike Dunk SB has been released in a specific skate design. The Nike SB Zoom Dunk Low comes with a modern style and pro skater features, a slim profile, padding around the collar and tongue area, and a breathable mesh at the toe box and tongue. The midsole is lightweight and comfortable.
